He was pacing, again. Billy watched him anxiously. Jacob knew he was aware of everything. He didn't blame Sam for ratting him out of the secret, but it would have been easier to live with Billy if he wasn't constantly watching him.
"I'm going to make a phone call." Jacob said pointedly. Billy nodded, leaving silently. Jacob had no doubts he was still listening. Slowly, he reached for the phone. It had been a week. A full week since the...incident. He'd been a wimp up until now, but he had to talk to Bella. He had to try...try to tell her. He picked her number from speed-dial and waited.
"Bella, don't be ridiculous. If he hasn't called yet, he certainly won't want you down there." He was staring into her eyes lovingly, trying to get her to stop babbling about that wolf. It was tiring enough, hearing it before. But now, a week later, she was still worried.
"Edward," She retorted using his tone - something that never ceased to make him smile- and grimacing. "He's probably upset because I've been blowing him off lately." They had no more time to bicker since the phone rang, and Bella answered on the first ring.
"Hello?" Edward's eyes darkened - he already knew who it was. Obviously mutts didn't know the meaning of a threat.
"Bella." He sounded relieved. Hell, he was. How would he have acted if Edward picked up? He struggled for a moment, pacing in the small space that the telephone cord would allot. His voice was tight. "Is he there?" Jacob asked lightly, but his voice burned with curiosity. He knew the answer already, of course he did.
Bella's breath left her when she heard Jacob's voice, and she smiled. "Jake." And then came his question. Why did it matter if Edward was there? Jacob should have assumed so. "Yes, Edward is next to me." She answered, and Edward began to kiss her hair, her voice sounding distant when she spoke next. "Anything you needed, Jake?"
Jacob closed his eyes, knowing he was touching her. Not as fiercely as he had touched Jacob, but with the same intent. A low shudder ran down his spine.
"Of course..." He paused, eyes flashing open with a frustrated sigh. "No, it's fine. I..." he paused, then decided against it. "I'll see you later, Bella." He said far too quickly, putting the phone down quickly. He couldn't do it. He couldn't even talk to her, knowing he was there.
"Wait, Ja-" And then the line went dead. Edward held back a chuckle, taking Bella into his arms, kissing her jaw, smelling her neck gently.
"Is he all right, Bella?"
"Yea, I don't know what's up with him. He hung up on me again." She said, taking comfort in his embrace. He enjoyed the way her pulse jumped around beneath her skin, the blood coloring her cheeks ever so lightly; lightly enough to drive him insane. "Come then, let's meet Alice for dinner."
With a huge grin on his face, Jacob prized the food from Paul's hand with great speed, shoving it into his mouth before the other had time to object. Paul turned, eyes fierce. He shook gently. "Paul, calm down. Jeez." Embry pleaded, giving Jacob an irritated look. Billy glanced on with amusement, rolling his eyes.
Jake." He turned. "I invited Bella here, she should be here soon."
"You...what?" Bella...Edward. His eyes widened. No, he wouldn't come here. Jacob looked straight into the fire.
"Fine.." As long as the vampire didn't come with her, which of course he wouldn't, he would be fine..
"Bella, your not going down there." His voice was firm, not wishing to argue. She wasn't going, and that was final.
"Edward, please! You said you were going to lighten up a bit. I'm going down there with Charlie. And the wedding is only two weeks away. We won't be able to see me much longer." She insisted stubbornly. Walking out the door with Charlie, she didn't glance at him again, for fear of his eyes, his beautiful eyes telling her not to go. When they arrived at Billy Blacks house, Bella already knew what to expect. Stepping out of the cruiser in a pair of light jeans and a blue sweater, She walked inside behind Charlie, smiling at Emily and Sam. Of course Charlie immediately went to where Billy was, and left Bella just standing there.
Jacob turned quickly as he noticed Charlie next to Billy, chatting away. There she was. He stood immediately, moving closer nervously. Already he smelt the disgusting vampire scent on her. "Hey Bells. How's life?" He asked, but didn't hug her in his usual fashion.
Bella couldn't help but give Jacob a warm smile. She missed him so much, as much as she wouldn't let herself admit it. Edward hated this, she knew, and she definitely would be in some trouble when she got home. "I'm great, Jake. How about you?"
He gave a shrug. "Alright." He didn't want to ask, but it was burning at him. "Looking forwards to the big day?" His tone was sour, though he hadn't meant it to be. Sam, glancing at the two of them nervously, called everyone to sit down so they could eat. Emily wandered to the stove so should could serve what was left.
Bella looked at her feet, obviously nervous about this question. Was she looking forward to it? Her life ending in eternal damnation? Married to the man she loved, was a nice thing to think about, she supposed. But still. Married ... such a big word ...
"Yeah. Alice has everything set up and perfect." Bella did sit, but didn't eat, not hungry at all.
Jacob sat next to her, but kept his distance in his seat, seeming uncomfortable. Sam got up before anyone else, clearing his throat uncomfortably as he approached Bella.
"Bella, do you mind if I talk to you?" He asked innocently. Jacob shot him a dirty look, wishing he knew what he was thinking. He tried to say no with his eyes without directly notifying Bella of it.
Bella stood up right away, shaking her head.
"No, not at all." She didn't know if he wanted them to talk in private or here in public, so she waited patiently for him to give a hint as of where. She didn't notice Jacob's pleading look, however, looking at the floor instead of Sam himself.
Sam gave Jacob a small nod and turned slightly. "In private, if you don't mind. It'll only take a moment..." Jacob let out a hiss, staring at Sam with burning black eyes. Embry turned to see the commotion, eyes locking on Sam. He nodded once.
"Of course not, Sam." She spoke, with gratitude. He and his friends had saved her and her family from disaster. She owed him her life, and would show him respect because of it. So she walked into the other room with him, smiling. "So, what did you need?"
Once they away and in private, he struggled a little. "Well, this is actually regarding your fiancée, Edward..." He stopped for a moment, trying to word it properly. "Jacob has...well, been having some problems from him. He doesn't want me to tell you what your vampire has been doing, but I feel you must know.."
Bella groaned internally. What had Edward been doing to harass Jake? "He hasn't told me anything." But maybe that explained why he was acting so odd tonight. "Go ahead, Sam. You can tell me."
Sam grimaced. Of course he wouldn't. But there was no doubt that Edward would try and hunt Sam down if he knew he was telling her this. But he couldn't see Jacob be tortured anymore. It was distressing not only him, but the whole pack now.
"Edward" he hissed a little, "came to La Push a few weeks ago... and... well, in short, Bella... he tried to seduce Jacob." Sam wondered if the words could sound even more bizarre, or if he could have worded it better. Probably not.
Bella's breath caught in her throat, but she had to laugh for a moment.
"Wait ... Edward and ... Jacob?!" She sounded hysterical, and it was obvious she was having a hard time believing it. "I'm not calling you a liar Sam, but that just sounds ... " She paused for a moment, thinking about it and giggling again. "Impossible."
Honestly, Bella would have preferred it if he just said that Edward had tried killing him. It would have made more sense.
Sam looked down at the floor. Of course, he had expected that response.
"Bella, I am not saying this for the hell of it. I saw it, the whole pack did. It happened." He said quietly, turning his hard eyes on her, hoping she would accept his word for it. If not he would have to convince Jacob to tell her properly, which he doubted the wolf would.
Bella's face turned serious, as she sighed.
"Okay, so ... your being serious." And then, the shock hit her. Why ... why had he done that? Why had he tried to seduce Jacob? What had gotten into his head?
"S-sam ... I need to g-go home ..." She whispered, brushing past him. "Dad, can I use your cell? I forgot something I need to do at home." Moments later, she hung up with Edward, and he was way to come get her. She couldn't stay here.
Jacob watched Bella anxiously, urgently eying Sam, needed to know if he had told her. He got up nervously, moving behind her.
"Bella." He breathed. If he told her...God, it would ruin everything. Maybe it wasn't that, maybe it was... what? He bit his lip, hard.
Bella shook her head, walking out the door and went to the border, Edward's volvo pulling up momentarily.
She slid in, and he smiled at her, causing her heart to clench painfully. "Take me home, Edward." Her voice was hard. The vampire frowned, and drove her home. What had happened? He found out later.
"I ... I can't believe you! How could you do that to him?" She asked, yelling angrily. He hadn't said anything, too shocked to reply.
"I ... he's just trying to be my friend, and you go scaring him like that! And ... cheating on me!" She broke into sobs then, Edward not being able to touch her. "I'm going to Jacksonville to live with my mom. I already called her and made plans. I'm done, Edward." His heart shattered. He couldn't breath.
-two days later-
Her bags were packed, and she was leaving for the airport at around 3 PM. Edward was not allowed in the house. She dialled Jake's number, trying to hold back her sobs. But this was her decision.
Jacob had been numb the past days, unsure how to feel. He was certainly glad that he had driven a wedge between Edward and Bella, but he also knew exactly what would happen. Bella would try to leave. She would leave not only the Cullens in her escape, but him, her best friend. Hearing the phone, he let out a soft sigh. Billy was out at Harry's. Jacob got up quickly, moving to the kitchen and picking up quickly.
"Hello?" His voice was dull, he noted without surprise.
Bella sniffled, and she replied. "I'm leaving, Jake. I'm going to Jacksonville to live with Mom for a while." She answered sadly. She didn't want to leave him by himself, but she couldn't stay. Not like this. She had told Edward that she might be back, and for him to think about what he had done. She knew she probably would be back, running into Edward's arms. But she had to get away for now. He had told her he would wait forever. She knew he meant it.
"I'm sorry ... " She whispered again, feeling helpless.
Jacob's knees almost buckled, but he kept himself up by grabbing the counter.
"Bella!" He gasped, then stopped, her words playing in his head again. He frowned. He'd expected it, but it hurt. "You...no, you don't have to, Bella. God, Sam should have never told you! Seriously, it doesn't matter Bella. Even if you don't want to see him, you can stay down in La Push, Charlie would understand..."
"No." Her voice was firm. She couldn't be by Jake either. It would just hurt him more.
"I'll be back, Jake. I promise. I'll come back, eventually. I just ... need a vacation." She whispered, trying not to burst into tears. She would come back. She knew she would.
Jacob let out a moan. "Please, Bella... I don't want to lose you because of him. Please, please stay." He knew it would hurt him less if she took a break from him, but he felt like he needed her, just to keep the leech away. No doubt he would come back, blame Jacob... He cringed.
Jake, I ... no. I can't." She whispered, and her tone was final. It was done, she was leaving. She would come back, but ... just, she needed a break. "I'll be back in a few months. Before my birthday." She told him. She knew she still loved Edward. Bella explained to him she needed a break, and he understood without arguing. But she would come crawling back to him, and he knew it. "The wedding is off for now, But Alice has all the arrangements set up for December." And it was May now, she had plenty of time.
Jacob gave up, eyes closing as his fingers tightened round the phone. His fingers made indents in the hard plastic. "The...wedding? You're still getting married..." He said dumbly, anger flickering through him. "I thought..." He stopped, finding it hard to talk suddenly. She still wanted to marry him. She still loved him. Pain shot through his chest.
Bella sighed. "I'm sorry, Jake, for what he did to you. But ... I didn't stop loving him. I'm just really mad at him." She whispered. Then she looked at the time. Time to go. "Sorry again, I have to go." She whispered. "I will miss you, Jacob. Very much."
Jacob stayed silent for a while, trying to take it all in. Bella still loved him. Bella....she didn't seem to care. He cleared his throat. "Okay. I'll see you, Bella." His voice broke on the last word. He put the phone down quickly, slumping down to the floor, putting his head in his arms as he cried.
